Maine superbill and invoice for LCPC, LCSW, LMFT, and psychologists

This page is the same Therapist Invoice Generator generator with Maine selected. Out-of-network clients still need a superbill with your NPI, tax ID, Maine license number, CPT codes, ICD-10 diagnoses, place of service, and fees. Private-pay clients usually need a simpler invoice — toggle the document type above.

License titles used on Maine superbills

Independent counseling in Maine is commonly written as LCPC. Also print the letters you actually hold: LCPC, LCSW, LMFT, Licensed Psychologist. The board to match your number against is the Maine Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure. License line hint: ME LCPC #.

Maine's independent counseling title is LCPC. Social workers use LCSW / LMSW depending on tier.

Telehealth coding (national rules, used in Maine)

In-office sessions use place of service 11 and no telehealth modifier. Video visits with the client at home use POS 10 and modifier 95. If the client is not at home, use POS 02. Audio-only, when the payer allows it, is modifier 93. Do not pair POS 11 with modifier 95.

Sales tax on therapy in Maine

Maine generally does not charge sales tax on professional counseling. This generator defaults tax to zero. Add a note, not a tax engine, if your situation is unusual (retail products, groups billed as events, etc.).

Interstate compacts (verify before you practice)

  • Counseling Compact: Enacted (confirm if privileges are live)
  • PSYPACT (psychologists): Active
  • Social Work Compact: Enacted (confirm if privileges are live)

Enacted is not the same as operational. A compact privilege does not replace documenting the license or privilege you used on the date of service.

Do I need a Maine address on the superbill?

Print the practice address you use for licensing and malpractice. Telehealth from another state does not replace the need to be authorized in the client's state.

What to put on a Maine superbill

  • Your legal name, LCPC or other credential, practice address, phone
  • NPI (Type 1) and EIN or SSN as tax ID
  • Maine license number as printed by the Maine Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure
  • Client name, date of birth, member ID if they want reimbursement
  • Each date of service, POS, CPT (90834 / 90837 / 90791 are the usual set), ICD-10, fee, amount paid

Orientation only — not billing, tax, or legal advice. Payer rules beat this page.

Maine private-practice clinicians use superbills for out-of-network (OON) insurance reimbursement and invoices for self-pay clients. This generator builds either document in the browser—no PHI upload—and downloads a PDF with rendering credential, Maine license number, NPI, CPT, ICD-10, place of service, and payment lines.

Select Maine defaults when your rendering authority and the client's location for the session are Maine (or another jurisdiction you are lawfully authorized to serve). Match the exact title on your board record. This page is workflow documentation only—not legal, billing, or tax advice.

License titles that belong on the form

Maine's clinical counseling title is Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). Maine also licenses Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) for non-clinical counseling scopes—print the title that matches your board license. Social workers use LCSW / LMSW tiers as applicable; MFTs use LMFT.

Other titles commonly used on Maine superbills:

  • LPC — print the exact letters on your Maine license/board record.
  • LCSW — print the exact letters on your Maine license/board record.
  • LMFT — print the exact letters on your Maine license/board record.
  • Licensed Psychologist — print the exact letters on your Maine license/board record.

Exact credential dropdown strings:

`LCPC` · `LPC` · `LCSW` · `LMFT` · `Licensed Psychologist`

Independently licensed clinicians list their own license only. Associates and provisionally licensed clinicians must use the associate/provisional title and should identify the supervisor when a payer asks. Do not put the independent title on the form during a supervised period.

Board, license number, lookup

Counselor licenses are issued by the Maine Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation. Verify via Maine's official individual license search and copy the number exactly.

Official verification: https://www.pfr.maine.gov/ALMSOnline/ALMSQuery/SearchIndividual.aspx. Copy the license number exactly as shown. The generator hint ME LCPC # is a placeholder—replace it with your real board number. Include individual NPI (and group NPI if applicable) plus EIN/SSN as the payer requires.

Interstate practice: Counseling Compact / PSYPACT / SW compact

Snapshot for 2026-09-14 (always re-check official maps):

  • Counseling Compact — enacted (not yet operational for privileges). Maine appears on counselingcompact.gov/map/compact-states. Privileges are usable only when both home and remote states are live/operational—check the current live list before relying on a privilege.
  • PSYPACT — yes. Maine participates for psychologists who hold required ASPPB authorizations (E.Passport / TAP as applicable). Confirm on psypact.gov. PSYPACT does not authorize counselor, social work, or MFT practice.
  • Social Work Licensure Compact — enacted. Maine is listed on swcompact.org/compact-jurisdictions. Multistate social work licenses are not yet being issued while the commission implements its data system.

Verify before you rely on it. Compact membership and privilege systems change. This page's flags are for generator defaults only.

Telehealth + place of service

For video psychotherapy superbills, use the place-of-service codes payers expect:

  • POS 10 — patient at home
  • POS 02 — telehealth other than home
  • Modifier 95 — when the plan wants synchronous telemedicine marked

Do not code a video-only session as POS 11. A Maine license, a live Counseling Compact privilege naming Maine (when operational), or another lawful authorization must cover the client's location. Put your licensed practice address on the form even when the session is remote.

Sales tax on therapy invoices

Maine sales tax generally applies to tangible personal property and certain taxable services. Professional counseling and psychotherapy session fees are generally not taxed as retail sales. Leave tax at $0 on clinical invoices. Confirm with Maine Revenue Services if you sell goods.

How to fill the Maine generator

  1. Choose Superbill or Invoice.
  2. Set jurisdiction to ME.
  3. Enter rendering name; select LCPC (default) or another credential you currently hold from the dropdown.
  4. Complete practice demographics, NPI, tax ID, and Maine board license number.
  5. Add client member ID / DOB only if needed for the OON claim.
  6. Enter DOS, CPT, ICD-10, units, fees, and payments.
  7. Telehealth: POS 10 or 02; modifier 95 when required.
  8. Keep sales tax aligned with Maine rules (see tax section)—usually $0 on therapy-only fees unless local advice says otherwise.
  9. Download the PDF locally—nothing is uploaded.

Two worked Maine examples

Maine's credential split is subtler than the usual two-tier system: LCPC is the clinical counseling title, while LPC covers non-clinical counseling scopes — and the distinction follows the license, not the setting. The two documents below come from a fictional Portland practice: one private-pay invoice, one out-of-network superbill. All identifiers are placeholders.

Example 1 — an in-office private-pay Maine invoice

An LCPC sees a self-pay client for weekly 45-minute sessions in the office. No insurer is involved, so the document is an invoice — services, dates, charges, payments — and the diagnosis column can stay empty.

Date of serviceServiceCPTPOSChargePaid
Jun 2Individual psychotherapy, 45 min9083411$140.00$140.00
Jun 9Individual psychotherapy, 45 min9083411$140.00$140.00
Jun 16Individual psychotherapy, 45 min9083411$140.00$140.00
Jun 23Individual psychotherapy, 45 min9083411$140.00$140.00
Sales tax (see below)$0.00
Total$560.00$560.00

POS 11 is accurate for office sessions. The tax line stays at $0.00 because Maine generally does not charge sales tax on professional counseling — therapy-only invoices carry no taxable line. The credential is LCPC, Maine's clinical counseling title, and the license field follows the ME LCPC # hint — copy the number exactly as the state's individual license search displays it.

Example 2 — a telehealth out-of-network superbill

A second client in Bangor has a PPO and attends weekly by video from home. The document must satisfy an adjuster's checklist, so it becomes a superbill: the invoice fields plus diagnosis, telehealth coding, and the complete provider identity block.

Date of serviceCPTModifierPOSICD-10ChargePaid
Sep 8907919510F33.1$170.00$170.00
Sep 15908349510F33.1$140.00$140.00
Sep 22908349510F33.1$140.00$140.00
Sep 29908349510F33.1$140.00$140.00
Total$590.00$590.00

The client was at home, so POS 10 applies — telehealth from anywhere else would take 02, and 11 would falsely claim an office visit. Modifier 95 marks synchronous telemedicine for the plans that require it. The intake bills 90791; the 45-minute follow-ups bill 90834.

The provider block carries the rendering name with LCPC — the clinical license under the Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation — plus the license number from the official search, NPI, practice address, and tax ID. The paid column is populated because OON reimbursement repays actual expenditures.

Both parties were in Maine, so the state license sufficed. Maine has enacted the Counseling Compact — privileges require both home and remote states to be live before reliance — and participates in PSYPACT for psychologists holding ASPPB authorizations.

Common mistakes on Maine superbills

  • Assuming LPC and LCPC are interchangeable. In Maine they are not: LCPC is the clinical counseling title and LPC covers non-clinical scopes. Print the title that matches your board license — the scope follows the credential.
  • Printing a supervised status as an independent title. Associate and provisional statuses are not LCPC or LPC. Print the exact credential held and identify the supervisor when the plan asks.
  • Searching the wrong portal. Counselor licenses live under the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation's individual license search — use that official lookup rather than a third-party directory.
  • Treating enacted compact status as live. Maine is a Counseling Compact member, but privileges require operational status on both ends — verify counselingcompact.gov first.
  • Coding telehealth as POS 11. Use 10 for a client at home and 02 for telehealth elsewhere. POS 11 describes an office visit.
  • Adding a sales-tax line. Maine generally does not tax professional counseling. Leave the line at $0 unless you sell taxable goods.

FAQ

Do I need a Maine address on the superbill?

Print the practice address you use for licensing and malpractice. Telehealth from another state does not replace the need to be authorized in the client's state.

Is Maine in the Counseling Compact?

Maine has enacted the compact but is not among the live/operational states as of this retrieval. Privileges work only when both home and remote states are live—check counselingcompact.gov.

Does Maine tax therapy sessions?

Maine generally does not charge sales tax on professional counseling. Leave tax at $0 on session-only invoices unless you sell taxable goods.

Can a Maine psychologist use PSYPACT?

Maine participates in PSYPACT. You still need active authorizations and must follow Commission rules—verify on psypact.gov.

What do OON payers want on a Maine superbill?

Name + Maine credential (LCPC or as licensed), board license number, NPI, DOS, CPT, ICD-10, POS, charges, payments, and telehealth modifiers when required.

Why these sources matter

Every factual claim on this page traces back to a primary source: Maine Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure (OPOR), the official interstate-compact commissions, and Maine's own tax authority. That matters because out-of-network billing guidance ages badly — license titles get renamed, compacts add members, and taxable-service lists get amended. Secondhand summaries lag those changes by months. The links below are the records themselves, with the date each was checked, so you can re-verify anything here before you rely on it for a claim.
