Kansas superbill and invoice for LCPC, LCSW, LMFT, and psychologists

This page is the same Therapist Invoice Generator generator with Kansas selected. Out-of-network clients still need a superbill with your NPI, tax ID, Kansas license number, CPT codes, ICD-10 diagnoses, place of service, and fees. Private-pay clients usually need a simpler invoice — toggle the document type above.

License titles used on Kansas superbills

Independent counseling in Kansas is commonly written as LCPC. Also print the letters you actually hold: LPC, LCPC, LSCSW, LCMFT, Licensed Psychologist. The board to match your number against is the Kansas BSRB. License line hint: KS LCPC #.

Kansas is two-tier (LPC / LCPC). Clinical social workers use LSCSW. Marriage and family: LCMFT.

Telehealth coding (national rules, used in Kansas)

In-office sessions use place of service 11 and no telehealth modifier. Video visits with the client at home use POS 10 and modifier 95. If the client is not at home, use POS 02. Audio-only, when the payer allows it, is modifier 93. Do not pair POS 11 with modifier 95.

Sales tax on therapy in Kansas

Professional therapy is generally exempt from Kansas sales tax. This generator defaults tax to zero. Add a note, not a tax engine, if your situation is unusual (retail products, groups billed as events, etc.).

Interstate compacts (verify before you practice)

  • Counseling Compact: Enacted (confirm if privileges are live)
  • PSYPACT (psychologists): Active
  • Social Work Compact: Enacted (confirm if privileges are live)

Enacted is not the same as operational. A compact privilege does not replace documenting the license or privilege you used on the date of service.

Which Kansas title belongs on an OON superbill?

Independent private-practice counselors typically list LCPC. Associates and LPC-only clinicians should use the title they legally hold.

What to put on a Kansas superbill

  • Your legal name, LCPC or other credential, practice address, phone
  • NPI (Type 1) and EIN or SSN as tax ID
  • Kansas license number as printed by the Kansas BSRB
  • Client name, date of birth, member ID if they want reimbursement
  • Each date of service, POS, CPT (90834 / 90837 / 90791 are the usual set), ICD-10, fee, amount paid

Orientation only — not billing, tax, or legal advice. Payer rules beat this page.

Kansas private-practice clinicians use superbills for out-of-network (OON) insurance reimbursement and invoices for self-pay clients. This generator builds either document in the browser—no PHI upload—and downloads a PDF with rendering credential, Kansas license number, NPI, CPT, ICD-10, place of service, and payment lines.

Select Kansas defaults when your rendering authority and the client's location for the session are Kansas (or another jurisdiction you are lawfully authorized to serve). Match the exact title on your board record. This page is workflow documentation only—not legal, billing, or tax advice.

License titles that belong on the form

Kansas is two-tier for counselors: LPC and independent Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). Clinical social workers use LSCSW. Marriage and family therapists use LCMFT. Independent private-practice counselors typically list LCPC on OON superbills.

Other titles commonly used on Kansas superbills:

  • LPC — print the exact letters on your Kansas license/board record.
  • LSCSW — print the exact letters on your Kansas license/board record.
  • LCMFT — print the exact letters on your Kansas license/board record.
  • Licensed Psychologist — print the exact letters on your Kansas license/board record.

Exact credential dropdown strings:

`LPC` · `LCPC` · `LSCSW` · `LCMFT` · `Licensed Psychologist`

Independently licensed clinicians list their own license only. Associates and provisionally licensed clinicians must use the associate/provisional title and should identify the supervisor when a payer asks. Do not put the independent title on the form during a supervised period.

Board, license number, lookup

Licenses for counselors, social workers, MFTs, and related professions are issued by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB). Verify through BSRB's official licensee tools and copy the number exactly.

Official verification: https://ksbsrb.ks.gov/. Copy the license number exactly as shown. The generator hint KS LCPC # is a placeholder—replace it with your real board number. Include individual NPI (and group NPI if applicable) plus EIN/SSN as the payer requires.

Interstate practice: Counseling Compact / PSYPACT / SW compact

Snapshot for 2026-09-14 (always re-check official maps):

  • Counseling Compact — enacted (not yet operational for privileges). Kansas appears on counselingcompact.gov/map/compact-states. Privileges are usable only when both home and remote states are live/operational—check the current live list before relying on a privilege.
  • PSYPACT — yes. Kansas participates for psychologists who hold required ASPPB authorizations (E.Passport / TAP as applicable). Confirm on psypact.gov. PSYPACT does not authorize counselor, social work, or MFT practice.
  • Social Work Licensure Compact — enacted. Kansas is listed on swcompact.org/compact-jurisdictions. Multistate social work licenses are not yet being issued while the commission implements its data system.

Verify before you rely on it. Compact membership and privilege systems change. This page's flags are for generator defaults only.

Telehealth + place of service

For video psychotherapy superbills, use the place-of-service codes payers expect:

  • POS 10 — patient at home
  • POS 02 — telehealth other than home
  • Modifier 95 — when the plan wants synchronous telemedicine marked

Do not code a video-only session as POS 11. A Kansas license, a live Counseling Compact privilege naming Kansas (when operational), or another lawful authorization must cover the client's location. Put your licensed practice address on the form even when the session is remote.

Sales tax on therapy invoices

Kansas retailers' sales tax generally applies to tangible personal property and certain taxable services. Professional counseling and psychotherapy session fees are generally exempt. Leave tax at $0 on clinical invoices. Confirm with the Kansas Department of Revenue if you sell goods.

Two worked Kansas examples

Kansas paperwork runs through the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board — BSRB — and its distinctive feature is a credential alphabet that differs from every neighboring state: LPC versus LCPC for counselors, LSCSW for clinical social workers, LCMFT for marriage and family therapists. The two documents below come from a fictional Overland Park practice. All identifiers are placeholders.

Example 1 — an in-office private-pay Kansas invoice

An LCPC sees a self-pay client for weekly 45-minute sessions in the office. No insurer is involved, so the document is an invoice — services, dates, charges, payments — and the diagnosis column can stay empty.

Date of serviceServiceCPTPOSChargePaid
Jun 3Individual psychotherapy, 45 min9083411$135.00$135.00
Jun 10Individual psychotherapy, 45 min9083411$135.00$135.00
Jun 17Individual psychotherapy, 45 min9083411$135.00$135.00
Jun 24Individual psychotherapy, 45 min9083411$135.00$135.00
Sales tax (see below)$0.00
Total$540.00$540.00

POS 11 is accurate for office sessions. The tax line stays at $0.00 because professional therapy is generally exempt from Kansas sales tax — therapy-only invoices carry no taxable line. The credential is LCPC, Kansas's independent clinical counseling license, and the license field follows the KS LCPC # hint — copy the number exactly as BSRB's licensee tools display it.

Example 2 — a telehealth out-of-network superbill

A second client in Wichita has a PPO and attends weekly by video from home. The document must satisfy an adjuster's checklist, so it becomes a superbill: the invoice fields plus diagnosis, telehealth coding, and the complete provider identity block.

Date of serviceCPTModifierPOSICD-10ChargePaid
Aug 6907919510F32.1$160.00$160.00
Aug 13908349510F32.1$135.00$135.00
Aug 20908349510F32.1$135.00$135.00
Aug 27908349510F32.1$135.00$135.00
Total$565.00$565.00

The client was at home, so POS 10 applies — telehealth from anywhere else would take 02, and 11 would falsely claim an office visit. Modifier 95 marks synchronous audio-video service for the plans that require it. The intake bills 90791; the 45-minute follow-ups bill 90834.

The provider block carries the rendering name with LCPC — Kansas's independent clinical tier, which is what most OON payers expect from a private-practice counselor — plus the BSRB license number, NPI, practice address, and tax ID. The paid column is populated because OON reimbursement repays actual expenditures.

Both parties were in Kansas, so the state license sufficed. Kansas has enacted the Counseling Compact — privileges require both home and remote states to be live on the Commission map before reliance — and participates in PSYPACT for psychologists with current ASPPB authorizations.

Common mistakes on Kansas superbills

  • Mixing up LPC and LCPC. Kansas is two-tier: LCPC is the independent clinical license, LPC is the other tier. Independent private-practice superbills typically list LCPC — print LPC only if that is your actual credential.
  • Printing LCSW or LMFT for Kansas credentials. Kansas's clinical social work title is LSCSW and its MFT title is LCMFT — the neighboring states' abbreviations do not match BSRB records. Print the exact letters on the license.
  • Treating enacted compact status as live. Kansas is a Counseling Compact member, but privileges require operational status on both ends — verify counselingcompact.gov before interstate reliance.
  • Coding telehealth as POS 11. Use 10 for a client at home and 02 for telehealth elsewhere. POS 11 describes an office visit.
  • Adding a sales-tax line. Professional therapy is generally exempt from Kansas sales tax. Leave the line at $0 unless you sell taxable goods.
  • Leaving the paid column blank. OON plans reimburse money already spent — a superbill without payments gives the adjuster nothing to act on.

Why these sources matter

Every factual claim on this page traces back to a primary source: Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB), the official interstate-compact commissions, and Kansas's own tax authority. That matters because out-of-network billing guidance ages badly — license titles get renamed, compacts add members, and taxable-service lists get amended. Secondhand summaries lag those changes by months. The links below are the records themselves, with the date each was checked, so you can re-verify anything here before you rely on it for a claim.
